Men, Is It Time to Talk About How You’re Really Feeling?
When was the last time you spoke about how you’re really feeling? For many men, the answer is often “never.” The truth is, men are facing a mental health crisis, but it’s one that’s rarely talked about.
In Wales and across the UK, the numbers tell a story that’s hard to ignore:
Suicide Rates: Men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women. In the UK, 75% of all suicides are by men, making it the leading cause of death for men under 50.
Mental Health Disorders: 12.5% of men in England have a common mental health problem like anxiety or depression. Many men in Wales face the same struggles but may not feel able to ask for help.
Alcohol Dependence: Men are three times more likely to become dependent on alcohol than women, often using it to cope with stress or depression.
Why Don’t Men Talk About Mental Health?
Many men feel they can’t speak up about their mental health. The reasons often include:
Worrying about looking weak
Fear of being judged or embarrassed
Not wanting to burden others
Feeling like it won’t make a difference
Not having someone they trust to talk to
These feelings are common but can lead to bigger problems if left unaddressed.
Signs Men Might Be Struggling
Sometimes, it’s hard to recognise when you or someone you know is dealing with poor mental health. Men often show different signs of depression, such as:
Being irritable or angry more often
Taking risks or acting recklessly
Feeling like they’ve lost control
Becoming more aggressive
Using alcohol or drugs to block out feelings
These behaviours are often ways of hiding pain, but they can make things worse over time.
